It’s official — when Alex Furr finishes her high school career as an Athens Hornet, she’ll be a Fresno State Bulldog.
Furr on Tuesday officially signed her National Letter of Intent to play college basketball at the California university. She signed at halftime of the junior varsity game in front of the Athens fans who have cheered on the four-year starter.
Many of the people who have played an integral role in Furr’s life were also on hand, including her parents, Guy and Tina Furr, her brother, Preston, her current coach, Austin Durrett, her previous coach, Keith Durrett, and Athens High assistant basketball coach Tosha Spain.
“I’ve kind of had my mind set on Fresno State for a long time, and I had been thinking about (playing for a college in) California,” Furr told the Review in September. “I just fit right in with them when I visited.”
Furr, a two-time all-state guard, averaged 30.1 points per game as a junior and led the state of Texas in three-pointers made with 146 — which was fifth-best nationally. She has hit 329 career three-pointers.
“Alex is the best three-pointer shooter in the state of Texas,” Fresno State Head Coach Adrian Wiggins said. “She is a competitive guard. We expect her skills to fit into our system and for her to be an impact player in our program.”
Furr celebrated her official signing with a season-high 48 points in Tuesday night’s 71-59 Lady Hornet win over Mineral Wells. The performance fell just three points short of her career high of 51.
In three games this season, Furr is averaging 44 points per game. The Lady Hornets are 2-1.
