The Lady Hornets made Austin Durrett a winner in his coaching debut in front of Athens fans.
Senior Alex Furr scored a season-high 48 points — three short of her career high — in a 71-59 win over the Mineral Wells Lady Rams Tuesday at AHS Gym. The Lady Hornets improved to 2-1 on the young season, while a tough Mineral Wells squad fell to 0-3.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 24-12 lead after the first quarter but saw the lead trimmed to as little as three in the third quarter. Furr — who before the game officially signed her National Letter of Intent to play with Fresno State University next season — scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.
Durrett, who replaced his father, Athens High Principal Keith Durrett, on the bench, said he has been pleased with the Lady Hornets’ play early.
“It’s just a matter of consistency,” he said. “The fact is, we’ve got to make sure we’re up and ready for district.”
Furr had 16 in the first quarter and Demi Cumby and Treka Franklin hit big three-pointers to help the Lady Hornets out to an early lead.
But the Lady Rams struck back thanks to a big night from Cora Jenkins, who erupted for 19 of her 34 points in the middle quarters.
After cutting the lead to three, the Lady Hornets went on a 14-6 run to crack the game open. The run was capped by another three by Franklin, who finished with 10.
In junior varsity action, Mineral Wells defeated Athens, 62-22. Quaysha Minifee had 10 points to lead the Lady Hornets.Tiara Hornbuckle had four points.
The Lady Hornets return to action Friday at home against Rains. JV tip-off is set for 5 p.m., with varsity to follow around 6:30.
