Athens — With junior college football season right around the corner, five Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals are receiving preseason recognition as players to watch this season.

Defensive end Jhaustin Thomas, cornerback William Jackson, safety Josh Scroggins, wide receiver Shakeem Jefferson and tight end John Thomas have been recognized by the website

The website listed Jhaustin Thomas, Jackson and Scroggins as three impact players to watch in 2013, while Jefferson and John Thomas were named as Top 50 players for the class of 2014.

The website said Jhaustin Thomas is “a freak athlete who punishes opposing teams ... Jhaustin shows a long stride, solid wing-span, and powerful hits on impact.”

Thomas had committed to South Carolina prior to TVCC.

They said Jackson is eager to be a difference maker on defense ... shows amazing closing speed to catch up to the football.

For Scroggins, the writers said he plays with a real mean streak in him, times his hits perfectly on the receiver dislodging the pigskin. Perfect form tackler who competes with a lot of swag.

In the Top 50 list that the writers of the website put out, they said Jefferson showed a combination of explosive speed, amazing balance, and a knack for the end zone.

Jefferson rushed for over 2,800 yards during his senior year of high school at New Boston.

Jefferson can play multiple positions for the Cardinals from wide receiver to running back.

John Thomas could be a big target for the Cardinals this season at tight end.

During the off season, he verbally committed to the University of Texas but first he will look to make an impact in his final year at TVCC.

The sleeperprep writers said John knows how to gain an advantage on the opponent especially in run-blocking. His big frame goes with his long wing span which helps engage on the defender.

The Cardinals are looking to improve on a 3-6 season and 1-5 conference record last year under head coach Brad Smiley.

The season opens with a rematch against defending national champion Iowa Western August 24.
