REGION II, CLASS 2A AREA ROUND PLAYOFFS: MHS swept by New Boston, 2-0

HALLSVILLE — The Malakoff Lady Tigers needed two games on Friday to advance in the Class 2A playoffs but faced a tough pitcher in New Boston’s Bailey Day.

In the end, Day pulled out a complete game no-hitter with three walks and 11 strikeouts in a 2-0 win at Hallsville High School.

With the loss, the Lady Tigers finished the year at 25-10.

The Lady Tigers were able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth inning.

Denis was able to strike out Taylor Wright and Tye McDonald for the second out of the inning.

The Lady Tigers got out of the inning as catcher Georgina Salazar threw the ball to Denis to tag out Ashley Johnson at home to end the scoring threat.

Coach Matt Wittram’s Lady Tigers had a chance to make the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs in the inning.

Malakoff leadoff hitter Andrea Harris was called out on a interference call as teammates Kaitlyn Harris, Hannah Carter and Salazar were left stranded on base.

Malakoff starting pitcher Candace Denis pitched a solid game for the Lady Tigers as she gave up six hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Malakoff lost the opening game of the series, 5-1, on Thursday night.
