Brownsboro drops 4-1 decision to Chapel Hill in season opener

BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bears lost 4-1 in seven innings at Bear Field on Monday, despite outhitting Chapel Hill six to four.

The Bears were led by a flawless day at the dish by Chris Davis, who went 3-3 against Chapel Hill's pitching. He singled in the first, third, and sixth innings.

Shelby Rogers was in control on the mound. Chapel Hill managed just one hit off of Rogers, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out three during his four innings of work.

Braden Nelson recorded the win for Chapel Hill. He allowed one run over seven innings. He struck out three, walked none and surrendered six hits.

Chapel Hill never surrendered the lead after the first inning, scoring two runs on a two-run double by Andrew Black.

After posting one run in the third, Chapel Hill again scored one in the fourth. In the third, Chapel Hill scored on an error, plating C Williams.

The Brownsboro Bears Varsity's lone run of the ballgame came in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Rogers.

Brownsboro JV 12, Chapel Hill 3

Dylan Hall picked up his first win of the year with the win over Chapel Hill on Monday.

The Bears’ junior varsity blue team jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings of play.

They were able to score three more in the third and a run in the sixth and seventh inning.

Brownsboro travels to the Bullard JV tournament today-Saturday.

Softball

Elysian Fields 9, Athens 1

ELYSIAN FIELDS — The Lady Hornets dropped to 2-4 on the season with a tough loss on Monday night.

It was a rough evening,” Coach Jamie Poteete said. “We had multiple errors in the 5th inning which resulted in seven of their nine runs.  We were playing tough softball leading up to the 5th.  Then the flood gates opened so to speak.”

Athens will play in the Malakoff varsity tournament today-Saturday.

Soccer

Whitehouse 4, Athens 0

Coach Jonathan Ryal’s team fell to 4-8-5 overall and 0-3 in District 31-4A play with their loss on Tuesday night.

The junior varsity team also lost to Whitehouse 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Athens will have a doubleheader Friday night at Mabank.

Mabank 2, Lindale 1

MABANK — The Lady Panther soccer team competed against the Lindale Lady Eagles on Tuesday night, defeating them 2-1.

Mabank senior Savannah Henderson and Allie Duke were the leading scorers in the game.

Mabank now has an overall record of 12-2-2 and 2-1 in district.

The Lady Panthers will take on the Athens Lady Hornets Friday night in Athens.

“It was a back and forth game with each team getting opportunities to take shots on goal,” Mabank coach Jeffery Downs said. “Our defense did their job by constantly keeping the Lindale players at bay for most of the game. Our midfield and forwards are really starting to click. We look forward to the challenge that Athens brings to us on Friday.”

Powerlifting

AHS finishes third at Chapel Hill meet

CHAPEL HILL — The Athens boys powerlifting team finished third overall scoring 24 points behind Lindale, who won the meet with 35 points.

Bullard was second with 25 points, Texarkana placed fourth with 21 points and Nacogdoches was fifth with 18 points.

Athens Ricardo Rodriguez placed first in the 114-pound class with a total of 765 pounds.

José Rodriguez placed first in the 123 pound class had a total weight of 970 pounds, which is a personal best.

Jose also was named the Overall Best Lifter Award for the 114–to-165 weight classes.

Alberto Martinez placed eighth in the 198-pound class with a total of 1,035 pounds.

Barrett Senycki was sixth in the 198-pound class with a total of 980 pounds.

Tyler Trussell placed eighth in the 242 pound class with a total of 1,135 pounds, which was a personal best.

Brian Gutierrez placed third in the 275 pound class with a total of 1,250 pounds, which was a personal best.

John Arellano placed first in the Super heavyweight class with a total of 1,475 pounds, which was another personal best.

The following boy’s also competed for Athens: Osbablo Juarez in the 148lb. class, Dre’Tarious Chavis in the 181lb. class and Chad Walker in the 242lb. class.

Athens next powerlifting meet will be today at Fairfield.
