HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Ready for playoffs

AHS beats Mabank 12-2 in season finale

MABANK — Athens wrapped up the regular season with a dominate 12-2 win over the Mabank Lady Panthers on Tuesday night.

With the win, coach Morgan Harpole’s squad finished the regular season with a 13-10-1 record and 4-6 in District 15-3A play.

The Lady Hornets will head into the playoffs beginning April 29 as the No. 4-seed.

Mabank has been eliminated from the playoffs.

On Tuesday, Athens put the game out of reach with a seven run third inning.

With one out in the inning, Kelli Gartman opened the scoring with an RBI-double that scored Mackenzie Fowler from second.

Krystal Davis was able to come around on the throw for the 4-0 lead.

On the next at-bat, Sarah Red was able to triple to right field as Gartman came into score.

Bri Grogan then followed with a home run to left field.

Later in the inning, freshman Kristin House singled to center field as Hadley Cain scored from third.

Haley Durden was able to come around and score on the throw for the 9-0 lead.

Athens scored its final three runs in the sixth inning on an RBI-single by Red, an RBI-single by Cain and a run scored on a throw home scoring Gartman for the 12-0 lead.

Athens outhit Mabank 19-5 as Fowler went 4-for-4. She singled in the first, third, and sixth innings.

Gartman went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two run scored. She had a double in the contest.

Five Lady Hornets also had at least two hits in the contest, while five players had extra base hits.

House was able to handle Mabank's lineup with ease, racking up six strikeouts.

She allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk over six innings.
