Another title celebration.
Tuesday night was a night to recognize a team in the Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals that has accomplished what no other team has done in the history of junior college basketball.
The Lady Cardinals basketball program won the school’s third straight national title and eighth overall on March 22.
For seven of the eight sophomores leaving this year, they also compiled a record of 72-2 during their time at Trinity Valley.
With the title win, Athens Mayor Jerry Don Vaught made a special proclamation to the team.
“I have a proclamation and we are congratulating you on your eighth national championship,” Vaught said. “We would like to proclaim April 15, 2014 as TVCC Lady Cardinals basketball team day.”
Judge Richard Sanders also made an appearance at the event and paid his respects to the team for their accomplishments.
“I want you to know that we appreciate you and on behalf of the county it is an honor for you to be here,” Sanders said. “It is an exciting time to be here and best wishes to you girls in the future and let’s try and go for the four peat next year.”
When it came time for coach Elena Lovato to address the team, she laid out a challenge to her four returning players.
“For the freshmen, prepare yourselves to lead the incoming freshmen and transfers and let’s make another title run,” Lovato said.
She also thanked the current players and let them know that they will forever be remembered for their efforts during the past two seasons.
“We began the year by telling you girls to Leave a Legacy and you girls took to the challenge,” Lovato said. “This is real and you girls have etched your names in the record book and your picture will forever hang in Cardinal Gym.”
She also announced that Roddricka Patton is headed to the Big 12 as a member of the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the fall. Coco Baker and Anchling have also signed college scholarships.
