DISTRICT 15-3A GOLF: Eye on the prize

BHS senior Bragdon opens strong

Athens — Golfers made their way to the Cedar Creek Country Club in Kemp for the opening round of the District 15-3A golf tournament on Monday.

The top two teams and the first and second place individuals advance to the regional tournament next week at the Class 3A, Region II tournament April 14-15 at Tanglewood Golf Resorts in Pottsboro.

If one of the first two individual finishers is on an advancing team, the next highest ranked individual who is not on an advancing team shall advance.

The final round of district play started this morning at Garden Valley Country Club in Lindale.

After the first round of play, Brownsboro senior Jared Bragdon was sitting in top contention as he shot a 78 leading all Henderson County area golfers.

Mabank’s Corey Dyer was sitting in second place with an opening round 89, while Athens golfer Ries Dunavan was third with a opening round 90.

Hornet golfer Shane Renberg was fourth with an opening round 99. He was playing in the group with Bragdon on Monday.

Brownsboro finished out the first round with a team score of 450 as Tucker Thomison shot a 101, Zach McIntyre shot a 115 and Casey Stegall rounded out the golfers with a 156.

For Mabank, they opened the competition with a team score of 424 as Jace Capehart shot a 101, Hayden Burnett shot a 106, Zane Koskelin shot a 128 and Mason Allen headed into the final round with a 130. Mason Kemp led the area medalist with a 91 total.

For Athens, they came out with the best overall team score with a 420 among Henderson County golfers.

Along with Dunavan and Renberg, Chris Stephens finished with a 109, Christopher Williams had a 122 and Ty Haggard finished with a 138. Medalist Drake Rummel opened with a total score of 93.

On the girls side, Athens finished with a 480 team score as they were led by Sam Smith with a 112, Emili Morrison with a 122, Allison Kalawe and Brooke Deshazo with a 123 and Candace Clemmons with a 130.

As a medalist, Shelby Sims wrapped up the opening round with a 133 total.

Mabank finished the opening round in the team standings in contention with a 415 overall score.

Haley Browning and Libby Thompson led the way with a 103, while Jordan Jump had a 104, Tara McCord a 105 and Haley Mashburn went into the club house with a 141 total.

Brownsboro had a tough opening round as the Bearettes finished with a 678 total.

They were led by Kali Pahlon with a 121, Kassidy Grace with a 123, Haley Morrison with a 137, Patton Mitchell with a 146 and Madeine Loyless with a 151.
