Brownsboro sweep series over Athens, 6-4

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets were swept Friday night in their season series against the Brownsboro Bearettes.

Brownsboro jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first inning and held on for a, 6-4, win against Athens at Peg Cain Field.

With the loss, coach Morgan Harpole’s squad is now 11-9-1 overall and 2-5 in District 15-3A play.

Athens returns to Peg Cain Field tonight for a 7 p.m. contest against the Canton Eaglettes.

AHS will play their final regular season game at Peg Cain Field Friday night against the Van Lady Vandals.

The game will be Senior Night with action set to begin around 7 p.m.

Coach Meredith Grant’s Bearettes are now 17-5 overall and 4-3 in district play. They snapped a three-game losing streak.

They will travel to Mabank tonight for district action at 6 p.m.

In the top of the first inning, Brownsboro jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Athens pitcher Kristin House as Baylee McCurley and Madison Alexander pulled off the double steal to put runners on second and third with one out.

Kelsey Lemus reached on a fielder’s choice and McCurley came around to score the first run of the game. During the play, Alexander was able to come around to score to put the Bearettes up, 2-0.

Brooke Johnson was able to was able to bring home Lemus from third with an RBI-groundout off of House.

In the bottom half of the inning, Athens was able to put together an offensive rally of their own off Brownsboro starter Madison Timmerman.

Josee McNeece smacked an RBI-single to centerfield that brought home Haley Durden from third. Sam Smith was then able to make it a 3-2 game as she hit a single to centerfield as McNeece came around to score on the throw.

The score would remain 3-2 until the top of the fourth inning as Shelbie Bagby doubled to lead off the inning.

She would later score on the throw following a single by Karli Wilkerson for a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Athens cut into the deficit once again with a double by Durden with one out.

With two outs in the inning, McNeece drove in Durden with a double to left field.

Brownsboro added an insurance run in the top of the sixth as McKenzie Chambers drove in Bagby with a fielder’s choice for the 5-3 lead.

Both teams would add one more run in the seventh inning for the 6-4 finale.

McNeece led the Lady Hornets at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Durden went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Brownsboro was led by Bagby as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. McCurley and Lemus each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Brownsboro won the first contest between the two teams, 5-4, earlier in district play.
