AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens baseball opens season at 1-1

ELKHART — The Athens Hornets opened the season with a 1-1 record on the opening day of the Howard Estes tournament at Elkhart High School.

AHS defeated Center 10-9 in 10 innings and then lost to Rusk 5-4 in the nightcap.

AHS wraps up play in the tournament later today.

BHS beats Chapel Hill in dramatic style

The Brownsboro Bears opened up play in the Chapel Hill tournament with a 5-3 walkoff win over the Grace Community Cougars Thursday afternoon.

The Bears scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Cory Dodds picked up the win in relief of starting pitcher Tyler Thomison.

The Bears continued play in the tournament on Friday.

TVCC to host football combine today

The football coaching staff at Trinity Valley Community College has scheduled a one-day scouting combine today at Bruce Field.

Registration for the combine is schedule from 1:30-2 p.m.

The cost is $20 (check should be made payable to Brad Smiley Football Camps).

High school seniors and players with remaining NJCAA eligibility participating in the combine will be tested for speed, agility and athleticism by TVCC coaches. The combine is designed to give participants an opportunity to show the ability to play at the next level.

Participants are required to bring tennis shoes and cleats, workout clothes and information sheet.

It will be to participants’ advantage to bring a highlight video or two game videos and transcripts.

MHS senior Dowell heading to TVCC

Malakoff senior running back Damontes Dowell will be joining Athens senior Chris Jefferson on the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals football team.

Dowell made the announcement Wednesday.
