Athens — The Athens 'Cuse basketball teams, varsity and eighth grade, competed this past weekend in the ETS Tournament in Plano. Both teams made it to the championship game with the varsity taking first place and the eighth grade team taking home second place.

The Athens 'Cuse varsity team is primarily made up of the Athens High School varsity team members with the exception of Jacob Greenlee, who is from Martins Mill.

The Athens 'Cuse basketball teams typically play opponents made up of a combination of the best players from larger towns and cities.

So far the Athens 'Cuse teams have enjoyed great success, and are driven by hard work, attention to detail, and good sportsmanship.

The eighth grade team advanced to the championship round after competing in a hard fought semi-final game winning by two points.

The team is mostly comprised of seventh grade Athens middle school students with the exception of four players who are from surrounding towns, and one eighth grader.

“We play up in the eighth grade division because our goal is to challenge each of our atheletes and develop their skills to the highest level at an early age, and so far it appears to be working,” according to head coach Todd Koehler.

Both teams are hosting a fund raiser garage sale this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dogwood Estates at 6311 FM 2494 just outside the loop.

Both team travel to Tyler June 21st through 23rd to compete in the Prime Time Tyler Tournament.
