MABANK — Mabank quarterback Jordan Featherston threw for 254 yards and four touchdowns as the Panthers defeated the Athens Hornets Friday night, 46-0, at Panther Stadium.
With the loss, the Hornets drop to 0-2 on the season as they head home next week to face Bullard.
The Panthers (2-0), coming off a 24-23 double overtime win over Kaufman last week, had a passing game that was as good as advertised. Featherston, who threw for 297 yards last week, completed 30 of 39 passes.
“We’re still learning,” Athens Head Coach Paul Essary said. “We’re not only still learning our techniques and our fundamentals, but we’re still learning how to handle adversity. ... That’s a good Mabank team right there.”
The Panthers took advantage of four Athens turnovers and turned those miscues into 17 points — including the first three points of the game off the foot of Michael Blackburn, whose 34-yard boot made it 3-0. The score was set up by a Cam Cantrell interception.
Si Friedley scored on a five-yard run to make it 10-0 early in the second quarter, and Featherston threw his first touchdown of the game, to Michael Tanner, on a nine-yard score that bumped the Panther lead to 18-0.
The Hornets failed to recover the ensuing kickoff and the Panthers got the ball back with 41 seconds left in the half. Featherston’s 8-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Dustin Shultz to give Mabank a 25-0 halftime lead.
Carson Hutson started the game at quarterback and went 6 of 15 for 54 yards and an interception. Jack Barkley saw his first action of the season under center and went 4 of 6 for 47 yards.
Trey Neal had 2.5 sacks for the Hornet defense and Matt Jordan had 1.5 sacks and a blocked punt.
Randall Gamble led the Hornets with 28 yards rushing. Nick Monmouth had 15 yards on four carries.
