FRANKSTON — The Brownsboro Bears proved for the second straight week they can score points when needed against good football teams.
The Bears continued their high scoring offense with a 44-31 shootout victory over the Frankston Indians Friday night in non-district play.
“We knew there were going to be opportunities,” Brownsboro Coach John Settle said. “We have to keep scoring until our defense turns things around. From an offensive standpoint, we dropped some balls in the first half. We’ve got to get better in special teams and we knew we could get back into the game.”
The game started much like last week’s ballgame against the Kemp Yellowjackets when the Brownsboro defensive unit allowed Frankston to score on the second play from scrimmage.
Frankston (1-1) running back Treston Coleman darted 82 yards to paydirt around the left side of the offensive line for the early 7-0 lead. Justin Bergstrom booted the PAT good.
After a 46 yard field goal by Bergstrom extended the lead, the Bears took control scoring 25 unanswered points.
The Bears had a 51-yard touchdown reception by Cameron Warren from Ryan Owens, a three-yard run by Warren and a 40-yard touchdown pass from Zach Bailey to Deondre Taylor for the 18-10 lead early in the third quarter.
Brownsboro extended their lead on a 55 yard pass from Bailey to Keuntis Thompson before Frankston cut the lead to eight at 25-17 with a 62 yard run by Detrick Smith with 5:43 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bears (2-0) countered with Taylor’s second touchdown reception of 30 yards followed by a one-yard run from Owens and a 15 yard run from Warren late in the ballgame.
Warren led the way for the Bears with 95 yards on 16 carries and Bailey went 16-of-27 for 169 yards and one touchdown.
Frankston finished with a game high 249 yards rushing as Coleman had 14 carries for 137 yards, while Smith had seven carries for 108 yards.
The Bears are back on the road next week as they travel to play the Spring Hill Panthers. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
