TYLER — That old saying about football being a game of inches reared its ugly head Saturday night as the Eustace Bulldogs faced Grace Community Cougars in the finale of the Tyler Football Classic at Mewbourn Field.
After stuffing the Bulldogs (0-1) on a fourth down attempt, the Cougars scored the winning touchdown with just more than three minutes to play in their 33-27 win over Eustace.
The winning touchdown came on Grant Ingram’s 43-yard pass to Craig Schambach with 3:20 left — breaking the hearts of a Bulldogs club intent on avenging an eight-point loss to the Cougars last season.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on quarterback Chris Compton’s 1-yard run. Compton would later connect with Justin Hall on a 42-yard touchdown pass that put the Bulldogs back on top, 14-7 in the second quarter. Compton also had a rushing touchdown, as did Trevan Johnson on a 55-yard rushing score.
Johnson led the Bulldogs’ 251-yard rushing attack with 93 yards on 10 carries. Shawn Baldwin had 52 yards and Compton finished with 47 yards.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday night at The Boneyard against Dallas Life Oak. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
