JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Lady Cardinals domination

No. 2-ranked TVCC opens conference play with 81-35 victory over Paris

Athens — The No. 2-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals opened up Region XIV conference play with a dominating win over Paris Junior College 81-35 Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym.

On a night when the college honored the 2013 regular season and conference champion Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals football team during halftime, the Lady Cardinals had jumped out to a 46-13 halftime lead.

With the win, coach Elena Lovato’s squad improved to 10-1 on the year and will travel to Lufkin Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. game against Angelina College.

The win was the first conference win of the season and the third consecutive win following a loss in the Women’s NIT on Nov. 23.

It was also the 49th straight win at Cardinal Gym for the Lady Cardinals.

TVCC will play its final home game before the Christmas break on Dec. 13 with a rare double-header against Kilgore at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals defense allowed only seven field goals for Paris as the Lady Dragons had two in the first half.

TVCC jumped out to a 16-1 lead as Roddricka Patton opened the game with two straight three-pointers followed by a sweet pass to Autummn Williams for the jumper in the first two minutes of the game.

Jazmine Spears put game out of reach for the Lady Cardinals draining a jumper with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Lady Cardinals defense forced 18 turnovers by Paris.

The bright side for the Lady Dragons was at the charity strip — where they finished 18-of-27 in the contest.

The Lady Dragons were led in scoring by Shanice Vaughan with 10 points.

For the Lady Cards, they were led in scoring by Jazmine Spears with 21 points, Deborah Meeks with 19 points, Patton with 11 points, Adut Bulgak with nine points and Williams with seven points.
