The Athens Hornets junior varsity went 3-1 this past weekend in tournament action.
AHS finished in a three-way tie with LaPoynor and Spring Hill.
The Hornets defeated Gladewater in their opening game of the tournament.
Hornets Payden Quade picked up the win on the hill.
In their second game of the tournament, Athens defeated Spring Hill 3-1.
Esteban Chairez struck out 13 of the 24 batters he faced in the game.
Chairez had three walks and allowed only one run.
The Hornets executed a squeeze bunt by Landon Bynum to score Alex Fernandez for the 1-0 lead.
Alex Fernandez had a great night at the plate going 3-for-3 and accounted for two of the Hornets’ three runs.
In their third game of the tournament, the Hornets’ battled the LaPoynor varsity to a 12-11 loss.
“Defensively we did not play as well as we were capable of playing,” Coach Ricky Brooks said. “We made a few costly mistakes early on in the game but we didnt allow that to get us down. I was very proud of our boys because they could have easily given up and cut their loses but they didnt.”
He said the Hornets’ were down 12-6 going into the final inning of the game.
In their final game of the tournament, the Hornets blasted Eustace, 13-0 on Saturday.
AHS pitcher Juan Valdez delivered a no-hitter for the Hornets.
He walked only one batter in the game to stop a perfect game.
“The Hornets did a great job at the plate by giving Valdez a 13 run lead to work with,” Brooks said. “We are all very proud of Valdez for achieving this goal and we look forward to watching him perform on his next outing.”
The Athens Hornets junior varsity white team competed in the Athens JV tournament this past weekend.
The Hornets finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
On Thursday, Athens JV White lost to Eustace 9-4. Josh Sims pitched a complete game.
On Friday, Athens JV White beat Carrollton Ranchview 12-9.
Alvaro Miranda threw a complete game, striking out eight batters and only walking two.
On Saturday, Athens JV White lost to Gladewater 14-3.
Tyler Harris threw four innings against Gladewater while Josiah Jones came in for the fifth inning to finish the game.
Miranda, Josh Sims and Grant Hirsch led the team offensively during the tournament.
