The Athens Hornets definitely found their bats in non-district action Tuesday night at Hornet Field.
Coach Dallas Robertson’s Hornets’ blasted 16 runs on 11 hits off Ranchview Wolves pitching to improve to 8-6 on the season.
The Hornets head to Princeton this weekend for a three-day tournament starting Thursday.
The Hornets jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the first inning as the first 13 batters as Gabe Gross opened the inning with a walk, followed by an bases reaching error to Morgan Gimler.
With runners on first and second, both runners pulled off the double steal before Travis Takata loaded the bases with a walk.
After a strikeout by Clint Sharp, Daniel Mossberger slammed a two-run single scoring Gross and Gimler.
Following another double steal, Jesse Taylor loaded the bases once again forcing a walk.
Allen Jones then gave AHS a 3-0 as he smacked a single which scored Takata.
Following a bases loaded walk to Josh Darden that scored Mossberger, Kaleb Sifers smacked a two-run double of his own for a 5-0 lead.
Gross then got in on the act with a two-run single scoring Darden and Sifers for the 8-0 lead.
The Hornets would score their 10th run of the inning later as Takata smacked a double scoring Gross and Gimler.
Sharp would make the score 11-0 as he smacked a flyout to the Wolves’ centerfielder Kazuomi Motoike scoring Takata.
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, AHS would capitalize once again as Gross hit a sacrifice fly to the centerfielder scoring Jones from third for the 12-0 lead.
The Wolves scored two runs in the top of the third inning off reliever Allen Jones as Eric Mahnke hit a double to deep center field which scored Raef Venegas and Motoike for the 12-2 deficit.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Takata reached base after being hit by a pitch and then stole second.
Following a strikeout by Sharp, Alex Smith plated Takata with a single to give AHS a 14-2 lead.
With Smith on third following a passed ball, Taylor reached base as right fielder Aaron Mazyck misplayed a deep fly ball to the wall which scored Smith from third.
On the play, Taylor would wrap second and instead of holding up at third he scored on the play for a 16-2 lead.
Jones and Mossberger led the way for the Hornets each going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Gross went 1-for-1 at the plate with three RBI’s.
On the mound, Jones picked up the win giving up two runs — one earned — with three walks and one strikeout in three innings of work.
Gimler started the game and went two innings giving up no runs on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts.
