TVCC advances to quarterfinals after an 84-71 win over Angelina

TYLER — First year coach Kris Baumann has found just the right time for his team to be playing the perfect style of basketball.

The Cardinals improved to 20-11 on the year with an 84-71 victory in the opening round of the Region XIV basketball tournament at UT-Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.

Angelina won the previous matchup 62-60 in December.

TVCC, playing as the No. 8-seed in the tournament, will return to the court on Thursday afternoon against No. 1-ranked Kilgore College.

The quarterfinal matchup between the two teams will begin at 1 p.m.

“We want to come out and be as competitive as we can with heart in our next game,” Baumann said. “We are going to play hard for 40 minutes and see what happens. They are an outstanding ballclub and they are already in the tournament. We are going to play hard for 40 minutes and see what happens.”

In the opening 20 minutes, both teams played to a stalemate as they went into the locker room tied at 38.

The Cardinals held their biggest lead of the first half with 14:33 remaining on a layup by Tim Allen for the 18-14 lead.

The Roadrunners continued to battle as and cut the lead to 20-19 on a rebound basket by LaDerrien Jackson with 13:10 remaining in the opening half.

“They are a really talented basketball team,” Baumann said. “They really shot the ball well and we had to get out to their shooters.

Angelina shot 13-of-29 in the first half and finished the game shooting 43-percent on 26-of-61 from the field.

TVCC meanwhile shot 54-percent from the field in the opening half and rounded out the contest at 51-percent on 27-of-53 from the field.

“I thought we played really well,” “Offensively we shot the ball better than we have in different occasions this year. We were able to take care of them defensively and play our game tonight.”

In the second half of play, the Cardinals picked up its defensive intensity outscoring Angelina 46-33.

The Cardinals regained the lead with 14:30 remaining in the half on a rebound basket by sophomore Dominique Elliott for the 51-50 lead.

At that point, the Cardinals would never surrender the lead.

TVCC was able to cut the lead to as many as 13 points at 65-52 on an old-fashioned three point play from Tyler Corley.

Corley was able to dice his way through the Roadrunner defense for the short range jumper on numerous occasions.

He finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals continued pounding the  ball inside the paint as Octavius Ellis gave TVCC a 75-65 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

Josh Gentry led the scoring attack for the Cardinals with 19 points as five players scored in double figuures.

Tim Allen had 18 points, while Ellis and Karon Phillips added 12 points each for the Cardinals.
