AHS SOCCER: AHS Lady Hornets finding momentum with 2-1 win at JT

TYLER — The Athens Lady Hornets are finding the momentum they need at just the right time with four games left in the regular season.

Coach Dedra Jackson’s Lady Hornets’ picked up a 2-1 win over the John Tyler Lady Lions at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium Friday night in District 31-4A soccer action.

“They moved the ball well and played off the ball well tonight,” Jackson said. “They took control of the game and the midfielders kept the momentum going and that was a big key for us.”

With the win, the Lady Hornets are 8-7-1 overall and 2-4 in district play with a big game against Lindale at Bruce Field this Friday night.

“We have to get two more wins to assure us a playoff spot,”  senior captain Myranda Baumgartner said. “This one was the turn that we needed to get us in gear again for the rest of the year.”

On Friday, the Lady Hornets picked up the early 1-0 lead when Gabby de la Garza blasted a shot over the head of the John Tyler goalkeeper with 3:52 remaining in the opening half.

In the second half, the Lady Hornets capitalized on a corner kick as Brielle Patton popped a header over the goalkeeper with 39:15 remaining in the half for the commanding 2-0 lead.

With 33 minutes remaining in the game, JT scored their goal on a rebound attempt off the post as Alexandria Gatlin went to play the ball and was out of position on the rebound attempt.

“It was very important because when they scored that first goal I think that motivated us even more,” Baumgartner said. “I think we really stepped it up after that and we were able to get things done.”

Following their game against Lindale, the Lady Hornets travel to Whitehouse and then host Mabank and Chapel Hill to wrap up the regular season.

Their contest against Chapel Hill will be senior night.
