Athens —
Signing a college letter of intent for any high school player is a special day.
For AHS senior George Hutson, he accomplished that goal on Thursday afternoon signing his intent to play football at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.
“It means everything,” Hutson said. “It was tough getting it down to one college and trying to figure out where I wanted to go. It is good to represent all of my hard work and being able to play.
I liked the atmosphere of the college. One of the coaches called me and he seemed really interested in me. I went out and visited and like it a lot.”
Hutson was a multi-faceted player for the Hornets this past season playing quarterback and switching to outside linebacker when asked by coach Paul Essary.
Essary praised the work ethic of Hutson and said that will pay dividends in the Tigers’ program under coach Todd Knight
“George has been a team player ever since I have been here,” Essary said. “He has been a quarterback, a safety and we asked him to move to outside linebacker about this time last year and his comment was wherever you need me coach I will go.”
Hutson said during his talks with the ouachita Baptist coaching staff, they will be looking for him to make an impact as a defensive back, possibly in their nickel package.
Essary said knowing the success Hutson had as a linebacker should help him adjust to play in the college system.
“He made the switch during the offseason and was able to become a unanimous first team all-district linebacker for us last year,” Essary said. “For him to get an athletic scholarship to continue his education and have an opportunity to play college football at a university is extra special.”
Hutson said the drive to achieve a college scholarship came during the offseason of his senior year.
“I figured it was coming down to my senior year so the pressure, drive and motivation was coming to get me to play at the next level,” Hutson said. “It was good for Coach Essary to tell college coaches that came down my name so I could at least get my foot in the door.”
The Tigers’ finished the 2012 season at 6-4 overall.
