Athens —
Athen's K.J. Cumby put his name in some elite company as one of the best defensive players in the State of Texas on Tuesday.
Cumby, a junior linebacker, was named to the Class 3A first-team all-state team released by the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors. The picks were based on regular-season performance.
“I feel like there was some other players that should have made the list for us this year,” Athens football coach Paul Essary said. "It is definitely an honor to have K.J. make the list from Athens ISD.”
Cumby was also named to the District 15-3A All-District first-team at linebacker this season.
Essary said with Cumby returning next year for his senior season it is an honor for the team overall to have him named to the team.
“That is going to be great, and it will be a good incentive,” Essary said. “Those are the awards that you get when the team has success. I am excited to have a first-team all-stater from the Athens Hornets."
District 15-3A rival Canton had one player named to the honorable mention list in Conner Eiland.
The District 15-3A champion Van Vandals had one player make the list in defensive lineman Sid Moore.
