Three area student athletes were recognized for their hard work in the class room by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association as members of the academic all-state team.
Mabank’s Brett Butler and John Velez, along with Eustace’s Gavin Kirkhart received recognition.
To be considered a member of the team, students had to meet the following criteria.
• Have an overall grade point average of 93 or above, including grades 9-12 and the first six weeks of grade 12.
• Have been a member of the team in good standing at the time of submission.
• They had to be a senior.
• Be of good moral character.
State tournament coming to Mabank
MABANK — The Mabank baseball and softball association was awarded a state tournament earlier this month.
The Texas Teenage Association state tournament will take place in Mabank with 22 teams and 330 players coming to the city.
Last year, Mabank and Malakoff co-hosted the tournament.
The tournament will be held July 14-17 at George Watts Park with games throughout the day.
Kemp’s Coleby Payne competing in N.M.
KEMP — Kemp eighth grader Coleby Payne is competing in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo this weekend in New Mexico.
Payne — a North Texas Academy Homeschool student — earned his spot in the team roping competition during the Texas State National Junior High competition.
Payne is the Texas Champion heeler with his partner — Tanner Green from Cotulla, TX.
The duo set an arena record during the Texas State finals in Gonzales with a time of 5.54 seconds in round one. The beat the standing record from 2009 of 6.5 seconds.
The national finals rodeo wraps up on Saturday.
2013 Cain Center Leadership camps
The Cain Center has two camps scheduled for the month of July.
They will be hosting a tennis and team work camp July 8-19 and then host a basketball and brain gym camp July 22-August 2.
The camps are for kids who have finished kindergarten and are going into the fifth grade.
Cost of the camps are $35 for children, $175 per session for non pass holders or $160 for a second child.
For those with passes, the camp is $150 per session and $140 for a second child.
The camps run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
ACC hosting summer swim lessons
Summer Swim Lessons, hosted by the Athens Country Club is scheduled through August 1 at the ACC pool.
Swim lessons are open to the public and are hosted by the Country Club as a community service for the health and safety of the youth of our community. This is the sixth year that ACC will host summer swim instruction.
Swim lessons are for infants, preschoolers (3-5 years) and youth through 12 years of age.
Classes are run in two week sessions beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday through Friday with Monday being used as a make-up day in case of bad weather (classes for the July 4th were scheduled for Mon June 24 thru Wed. July 3).
Class fee is $45 for each two week session.
Lessons concentrate on working with the student in their swimming skills and safety, and are designed to work with the swimmer based on their ability starting with pre-school, beginner, and advance beginner.
All instructors have held certifications in Red Cross WSI, Lifesaving, YMCA pre-school, youth, Lifesaving and Lifesaving instructor.
Class will begin July 9 and July 23.
