CARTHAGE —
The Trinity Valley Community College Rodeo Team is off to a great start on the season after a strong performance in Panola this past weekend.
The TVCC team competed at the first Southern Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event Sept. 27-29 at Panola Junior College in Carthage.
The TVCC men’s team placed third overall at the Panola event. Freshman Wenceslao “Lightning” Aguilera from Athens and his partner, freshman Kolby Miller of Alba, won the team roping with a time of 4.9 in Friday’s first run and another 4.9 in the finals round Saturday night.
Freshman Jonathan Lee of Mississippi split third and fourth place in the bareback riding with a score of 74.
In tie down roping, sophomore Justus Whitcher of Athens placed fourth in Saturday’s final round and fourth in the average.
“It was a great rodeo aside from the rain, the team did an outstanding job representing TVCC and Athens,” said TVCC Rodeo Coach Brent Bratton. “It is such a blessing to have such an outstanding group of students and the great support from the college and community.”
The TVCC group will travel to Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde this weekend for its next event.
The team competes in 10 regional rodeos each year. The top three individuals in each event and the top two men and women’s college teams qualify to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo held in Casper, Wyo. in June.
