UIL STATE TRACK MEET: Dowell looking to make some noise in the shot put

TRINIDAD — Jordan Dowell has one thing he can claim at his final high school track and field meet on Friday.

He is one of the top nine shot putters in the state of Texas in Class 1A.

The senior will make his first appearance at Mike A. Myers Stadium in hopes of pulling out a state title.

“My adrenaline will be racing  because I made it. I would like to finish first or second in the meet,” Dowell said. “It feels great and I have been trying since my freshman year to make it. It is a big honor for me.”

Head coach and athletic director Kevin Ray said he was confident Jordan would make it after regionals.

“I kind of felt like he had it and there was one other kid that was throwing that had thrown farther than Jordan before the regional meet,” Ray said. “Jordan was able to throw his personal best and I felt pretty good about him getting there.”

Dowell threw 44 feet, four inches at regionals and now faces kids throwing between 55 feet and 45 feet, eight inches.

He said the road to the state meet was nerve wracking during regionals.

“I was sitting in third after my first throw and it was not a good throw,” Dowell said. “My last throw was the throw that put me in second and I just went on from there. The kid that was in second threw for 40 feet during the meet.”

Ray said he knows what he would like to see from Dowell on Friday in Austin.

“I would like to see him throw his personal best — which is a 44-4 — that he threw at the regional meet,” Ray said. “He is going to have to do better to place. There is a 50, a couple of 49’s and a 48 at state. I just want him to do his best and that is all that you can ever do.”

Ray said this is a special honor for Dowell.

“He did not get out of district his freshman year and then his sophomore year he went to area,” Ray said. “His junior year he got to regional ... It is exciting to see him take that next step to get there.”
