The Athens Hornets will begin their run to a state title this week when they take on the Crandall Pirates for the Region II, area round championship.
First-year coach Dallas Robertson’s Hornets’ come into the series with a record of 17-14 overall.
The games are a best-of-three series with the first game this Friday at Crandall at 7:30 pm.
Game two of the series will be in Athens on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. with game three to follow 30 minutes after if needed.
Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students at both sites.
Texas High School Coaches Association passes and District passes will be accepted for free admission.
In the final warm up game of the season for the Athens Hornets, coach Dallas Robertson said the Hornets lost, 8-1, to the Hughes Springs Mustangs Friday night in Van.
Crandall won a best-of-three series against Paris North Lamar in the opening round of the playoffs.
They were the No. 2 seed behind the Rains Wildcats in District 14-3A play.
The winner of this series faces the winner of the Pleasant Grove and Bullard winner in the regional quarterfinals next weekend.
The Kemp Yellowjackets saw their playoff run come to an end this weekend by the Quitman Bulldogs by scores of 12-0 and 11-3 in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
