HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING: Area powerlifters heading back to action this weekend

Athens — Powerlifters from across Henderson County will be back in action this weekend looking for a chance to qualify for the regional meet in March.

The Athens varsity girls team will be in Palestine on Saturday for the Dogwood Powerlifting meet.

The AHS Hornets will take this week off before heading to the Malakoff Invitational next Saturday.

Powerlifters from Kemp will take part in the North Forney meet on Saturday.

In Malakoff, both teams will be competing in the Dogwood Powerlifting Invitational at Palestine before hosting their meet the following Saturday.

The Athens girls team has finished with a second place finish at the Rusk Invitational and a fifth place finish at the Van Invitational in the team standings this season.

Kaelin Henry has improved her lifts in the first two meets of the year in the 97-pound weight class. At Rusk, Henry improved in the squat with a 155 pound lift and in the dead lift with a total of 185 pounds during the Rusk meet.

Marisol Ariciaga is another lifter for coach Dinita Heitz who has improved over the first two meets of the year in the 114 pound weight class.

Ariciaga improved her lifts by 60 pounds at the Rusk Invitational by lifting 225 pounds in the dead lift, compared to the 175 pound lift she had in the opening meet.

Ariciaga also improved her squat total with a 175 pound lift, compared to a 165 pound lift at Van.

The Malakoff Lady Tigers will look to improve on a sixth-place team finish at Sunnyvale last week. They are led by Candice Denis in the 165 pound weight class.

The MHS Tigers are led by Thomas Acol in the Super Heavyweight class.
