FAIRFILED — THe Athens Hornets powerlifting team finished second scoring 25 points in a meet earlier this week.
Fairfield won the meet with 30 points.
Madisonville was third with 24 points, Buffalo placed fourth with 22 points and Rusk was fifth with 18 points.
Jose Rodriguez placed first in the 123-pound class with a total weight of 985 pounds, which was a personal best.
He also won first in the Light Platform 114-165 Award, his 3rd time this year. He was also named a regional qualifier for the second time.
Dre’Tarious Chavis placed fourth in the 181-pound class with a total of 1,065 pounds, a personal best.
Barrett Senycki placed third in the 198-pound class with a total of 1,055 pounds.
Tyler Trussell placed fifth in the 242-pound class with a total of 1,155 pounds.
Brian Gutierrez placed second in the 275-pound class with a total of 1,275 pounds. Gutierrez was named named a regional qualifier.
John Arellano placed second in the Super heavyweight class with a total of 1,360 pounds. He was also named as a regional qualifier for the first time.
Ricardo Rodriguez also qualified to regional in the 114-pound class for the fourth year.
The Hornets will be at Regionals in Rusk on March 7.
AHS golfers showing strong results
The Athens Hornets boys and girls golf teams have competed in several tournaments the past two weeks with strong showing by all golfers.
On February 14, Chris Williams led the Hornets at Eagles Bluff Country Club with a 108, Matt Stanley shot a 110, Dustyn Fernandez shot a 111, Andrew Haggard shot a 122 while Tyler Haggard shot a 123.
On February 18, the team of Shane Renberg (90), Alec Hammac (94), Ries Donavan (102), Matt Stanley (113) and George Hutson (116) had strong showings at Eagle Bluff.
Chris Williams led the way at Emerald Bay Golf Course on Feb. 20 with a score of 109 while Andrew Haggard shot a 113 and Tyler Haggard shot a 114.
In girls action, the team of Emilli Morrison shot a 111, Brook Deshazo shot a 115, Allison Kalawe shot a 120 and Marissa Gross shot a 122 on February 21 at Emerald Bay.
In their final tournament of February, the team of Alec Hammac finished fourth with a scored of 80, Renberg shot an 86, Stanley shot a 102, Haggard shot a 114 and Hutson shot a 116.
In the girls division, Kalawe shot a 115.
The boys and girls golf teams will be playing their next tournamentat the Links at Land’s End Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
