FRIDAY NIGHT FLASHBACK: Surging Brownsboro puts hurt on Mineola, 40-21

BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bears improved to 2-0 in District 15-3A play with a 40-21 homecoming win over the visiting Mineola Yellowjackets Friday night at Bear Stadium.

With the win, Brownsboro improved its record to 5-2 overall and travels to Van next week for an important showdown in the district race with three weeks remaining. Both teams head into the contest with 2-0 records in district play. Kickoff in that game is set for 7:30 p.m.

With the loss, Mineola fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in district play.

BHS scored its first two touchdowns in only four plays as quarterback Shelby Rogers opened the scoring with a 63-yard touchdown run untouched on its opening offensive possession. Cesar Gutierrez booted the PAT good with 9:28 remaining in the opening quarter.

Following an interception by Brownsboro on Mineola’s next possession, senior running back Johntae Walker took the next three carries for the Bears’ for 54 yards, capped off by a 15-yard touchdown across the left sideline for a 14-0 lead with 6:50 remaining in the opening quarter.

Mineola was unable to get its offense going in the first quarter as Brownsboro forced the Yellowjackets to punt on two of their first four offensive possessions.

On Brownsboro’s next possession, the offense once again struck it big as senior Davonte Givens got in on the act with a 78-yard touchdown reception for a 20-0 lead with 2:49 remaining in the opening quarter.

Mineola then put together a 14-play, 75-yard drive as Dac Shaw barreled his way in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 20-7 with 8:13 remaining.

Brownsboro later added to its lead as Givens snagged a 19-yard touchdown pass in the end zone from Rogers for a 27-7 lead. The Bears would later extend the lead to 33-7 as Gutierrez caught a 23-yard touchdown pass for Rogers. It was his third touchdown pass of the opening half with 1:56 remaining.

Mineola receiver Harry Elhallaoui attempted to get his team back into the game in the third quarter as he snagged a 28-yard touchdown pass from Shaw with 1:36 remaining for a 33-14 deficit. Jerry Keener booted his second PAT good.

With the Bears’ driving on their next possession, Walker scored his second touchdown of the game to put the game out of reach from 17-yards out as he capped off an 8-play, 60-yard drive. He accounted for all 60 of the yards on the drive and finished the game with 13 carries for 114 yards and two touchdowns.

Mineola capped off the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run by Tyler Hudson for the 44-21 final.

Rogers finished the game 7-of-17 for 152 yards passing along with eight carries for 97 yards. Givens had two receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
