JUNIOR COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Lady Cards open regional tourney Friday at 11 a.m.

Athens — With a school record 20 wins in hand, the Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals head to the Region XIV Volleyball Tournament for a second straight year.

The 19th-ranked Lady Cardinals, 20-13, are scheduled to open play in the eight-team event Friday at 11 a.m. against San Jacinto College at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium. San Jacinto is 21-8.

At stake in the three-day event are berths in the national tournament Nov. 21-23 at Casper, Wyo.

The two teams reaching the regional tournament championship game will advance to nationals.

Coach Tosha Spain’s squad has won four of its last five outings going into the regional tournament. The Lady Cardinals are the No. 3 North seed. San Jacinto is the No. 2 South seed.

In Friday’s other tournament openers, Paris plays Laredo at 9 a.m., Blinn plays Panola at 1 p.m. and Tyler plays Wharton at 3 p.m.

The TVCC-San Jacinto winner advances to play the Tyler-Wharton winner in the second round Friday at 11 a.m.

The loser of Friday’s game will play against Friday at 7 p.m. against the Tyler-Wharton loser.

Day passes for the regional tournament are $6. Tournament passes are $15.
