The Athens Review
The Athens Lady Hornets wrapped up the regular season on Senior night with a tough four-game loss to the Canton Eaglettes Tuesday night in the District 15-3A finale at AHS Gymnasium.
Canton won by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 13-25 and 25-15.
With the loss, coach Liz Ramsey’s squad finished district play with a 4-6 record as the No. 4 seed.
They will now play the No. 3-ranked team in the state in Longview Spring Hill next week in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
The site and time are to be determined according to coach Ramsey.
The best game of the match for the Lady Hornets came in Game 3 as AHS jumped out to an early 12-5 lead behind the serving of senior Krystal Davis.
Davis served six straight points with two aces coming during the run.
Later in the game, the Lady Hornets were able to close out the game as senior Elizabeth Hilliard had a kill off an assist from senior Hannah Feinsod.
She then served out the game with a well placed ace for the final point and a 25-13 finale.
In Game 4, the Lady Hornets were unable to gain any momentum as Canton jumped out to an 8-2 lead.
The Lady Hornets did cut the deficit to 15-13 on a kill by senior Cari Aguilera and a block from Aguilera and Hilliard.
Canton’s Brianna Rhines was able to extend the Eaglettes lead as she went on a six point service run to give them a 22-13 lead.
AHS attempted to get back into the game as Hilliard capitalized on back-to-back kills to get to within 22-15 but Canton put the game away following the short run.
Canton had a kill by Rhines and Brooke Erickson served out the match.
Note: This was the final game at AHS Gymnasium for Feinsod, Hilliard, Aguilera and Davis.
