ATHENS —
The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals will try to rebound from a tough loss last week at No. 1 Blinn with another long road trip Saturday.
A week after dropping a 40-37 decision to the country’s top-rated team in Brenham, the Cardinals (6-1, 3-1 in conference) will face the Cisco Wranglers in a 3 p.m. kickoff at Chesley Field.
TVCC head coach Brad Smiley said his team was reassured by its strong showing against Blinn, but that it still took a couple of days to get over the loss.
“It was a big kick in the gut. There wasn’t a person in the program who didn’t think we weren’t coming back 7-0,” Smiley said. “The guys were down Sunday and Monday. We let one get away.”
The Cardinals enter the game in a second-place tie in conference with Navarro, which is also 6-1 overall and 3-1 in league play. Cisco enters the game with its playoff hopes on life support, clinging to a 1-3 conference mark (3-4 overall).
Smiley maintained his stance that the Cardinals are still on schedule to accomplish their two biggest goals — securing a home conference playoff game and winning the Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship.
A win over Blinn would move TVCC a step closer to securing that first goal, setting up a key matchup with defending national champion Navarro at Bruce Field to close out the regular season on October 29.
The last time the Cardinals made the 400-plus-mile round trip to Chesley Field, they were ranked No. 7 in the nation but got upset, 27-24, in 2009. The Cards rallied to beat Cisco last season, 31-27, in a game that started at Bruce Field but moved to Eustace after a thunderstorm knocked out power.
