JUNIOR COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Lady Cardinals fall to Paris in four games

No. 12-ranked Lady Dragons spoil Lady Cards home opener Wednesday night

Athens — The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals and the No. 12-ranked Paris Lady Dragons had split the first two matches of their season series.

Something had to give in the rubber match Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym.

TVCC lost in four games by scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-14.

With the loss, the Lady Cardinals dropped to 9-8 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. Paris improved to 15-2 with the win.

Wednesday night’s match was the first time this season the Lady Cardinals played in the friendly confines of Cardinal Gym.

In the first two meetings between the schools, the series went to only three games.

In the first game Wednesday night, TVCC jumped out to an 11-5 lead behind strong play from sophomore Kaitlyn McShan as she had three kills  during that run.

Paris then stormed back and tied the game at 13-13 on a nice service run from Jordan Strickland.

The Lady Dragons found moments to get the Lady Cardinals on it’s heels with a strong presence at the net.

T’Asia Black, Strickland, Abby Phillips and Haley Hostetler had big blocks to stop the Lady Cards momentum.

In the second game, TVCC played aggressive early on but could not get a big enough lead on Paris and held it’s biggest lead at 15-13. McShan had a strong kill off the assist of Ryleigh Thompson.

Paris kept the game close in the second set and trailed 24-22 following a timeout.

TVCC tied the match up at 1-1 as Ashlynn Caldwell capitalized on an assist from Thompson for the 25-22 finale.

TVCC was once again on the defensive in the third game as Paris jumped out to a 10-5 lead midway through the third game.

The Lady Cardinals battled back to a 14-10 deficit as Brittney Griffith slammed back-to-back aces but they could not get any closer.

In the fourth game, TVCC Lady Cardinals freshman Lauren Fernandez  had five kills to lead the way but it was not enough to extend it to a fifth and deciding game.

TVCC will look to get back in the win column as they travel to Ranger for a tri-match on September 14.

They will return to Cardinal Gym September 23 for a conference game against Tyler Junior College.
