AHS Lady Hornets lose in four games to Fairfield Lady Eagles

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets needed one point to extend Tuesday’s match to a fifth game against Fairfield, but the Lady Eagles stormed ahead at AHS Gymnasium.

The Lady Eagles outscored AHS, 5-0, to win 25-18, 22-25, 25-20 and 26-24.

With the loss, coach Liz Ramsey’s team dropped it’s third straight match after a fourth-place finish in the Robinson tournament last weekend.

The Lady Hornets will travel to Grapeland Friday night for a dual match against Grapeland and Trinity.

The varsity games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

The Lady Hornets will travel to Corsicana next Tuesday and will host Palestine Westwood next Friday at AHS gym.

In the fourth game, the Lady Hornets went up 24-21 on a kill from Krystal Davis off an assist from Hannah Feinsod.

Fairfield was able to serve out the game with three aces during the run.

The match was a see-saw affair between the two teams early on as Athens held a slim lead at, 10-5, early in the first game on a kill by Cari Aguilera.

The Lady Hornets cut the lead to 19-17 later in the first game as Alexandria Gatlin blasted a kill past the Lady Eagles.

In the second game, the Lady Hornets once again started out strong as they held a 5-2 lead on a kill from Elizabeth Hilliard.

Fairfield continued to battle and tied the match on several occasions late in the game.

Aguilera was able to seal the game two win with back-to-back kills to tie it up at 1-1.

In the third game, the Lady Eagles once again had a strong serving game as they took a 12-7 lead midway through the game.

Ramsey was forced to take a timeout and Athens responded as they stormed back to a 13-13 tie as Aguilera served up an ace.

Hilliard gave the Lady Hornets it’s last lead of the fourth game as she blasted a kill following a long rally for the 19-18 lead.

AHS battled hard in the fourth game behind strong play at the net from Hilliard, Red, Bri Grogan and Feinsod but it was not enough to pick up the win.

In the junior varsity game, Fairfield won in straight games 25-14 and 25-13 over Athens.
