MABANK — The Malakoff Tigers exploded for 35 points in the second half to pick up it's first win of the year with a 56-17 thumping of the Mabank Panthers.
With the loss, coach Jared Wingfield's team is now 0-1 on the season and will travel to Wills Point next Friday night. Malakoff (1-0) will play in the Dale Hansen Football Classic next week at Waxahachie against Italy.
Malakoff senior Damontes Dowell had a nice night offensively as he scored three rushing touchdowns of 1, 2 and 37 yards. He finished the game with 10 carries for 87 yards rushing and caught four passes for 91 yards. He also had one touchdown reception of 58 yards from quarterback Stephan Wolfe.
Mabank was able to keep the game close in the first half as they trailed 21-7 heading into the locker room.
The Panther had a nice 16-yard rushing touchdown from Clay Gaddis with 8:28 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 7-7.
In the second half, Malakoff started to put on the pressure as Garrian McCallister hauled in a 19-yard pitch and catch from Wolfe with 7:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Mabank marched the ball down the field and capitalized on a 34-yard field goal from Pedro Valdez for the 28-10 deficit.
The Tigers continued the offensive assault as Wolfe, Marcus Dowell and Derric Greenhaw rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Mabank got one final score from Dalton Reeder on a 16-yard reception from Garrett Holcomb with 3:31 remaining in the game for the 56-17 finale.
Wolfe led the way for the Tigers as he finished 14-of-19 for 270 yards passing with one interception.
Mabank's Corey Thompson went 6-of-20 for 54 yards and three interceptions.
