AHS continues win streak with shutout of Canton Eagles, 7-0

CANTON — The Athens Hornets continue to find their spark in the District 15-3A race with a 7-0 win over Canton Tuesday night at Eagles Field.

With the win, first year coach Dallas Robertson’s Hornets’ are now 15-10 overall and 6-0 in District 15-3A play.

Athens pitcher Garrett Conley picked up the win with a complete game four hitter. He struck out seven batters and walked two for his third district win.

AHS was able to blow the game wide open in the seventh inning scoring five runs.

Kaleb Sifers opened the inning with a single and moved to third on an overthrow to first base.

He then scored on an RBI double from Conley, Morgan Gimler then reached on an error and Travis Takata loaded the bases with a single.

Adam Stallings then hit a sacrifice fly to score Conley.

Lance Funkhouser then walked to load the bases once again and Gabe Gross smacked a single to score two more runs.

Athens opened up their scoring in the top of the first inning as Canton starter James Denton threw a wild pitch that scored Takata for the 1-0 lead.

In the third, Gimler led off the inning with a single, followed by another single from Takata.

Stallings then laid down a bunt but Gimler was thrown out on the fielder’s choice.

Gross then smacked a single to score Takata for the 2-0 lead.

Takata led the Hornets at the plate going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Gross went 2-for-4 with three RBI’s. Sifers went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In their two district games, Athens outscored Canton, 20-3, and won 13-3 in the opening district at Athens on March 19.

The Hornets will look to continue their win streak Friday night on the road at Van.

First pitch for the district contest is set for 6:30 p.m.

Junior Varsity

AHS sweeps Mineola in doubleheader

The Athens junior varsity team outscored Mineola 19-3 in doubleheader action on April 8.

In the opening game, the Hornets won 16-1 as Esteban Chairez went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and three runs scored.

Athens also had multi-hit games from Canales, Boyd, Bateman and Valdez.

In game 2 of the series, the Hornets squeaked out a 3-2 win over Mineola.

Boyd had the game winning RBI in the game and went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Chairez went 2-for-2, while Bynum went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Athens scored all of their runs in the fifth.
