Athens pitcher Garrett Conley and Mineola pitcher Ryan Browning gave an entertaining game through the first 7 and 2/3 innings until Athens Jesse Taylor came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Facing an 0-1 count, Taylor ripped a walkoff RBI single to right field for the 3-2 win in eight innings over the Mineola Yellowjackets at Hornet Field Thursday night.
First year coach Dallas Robertson’s Hornets are now 13-10 on the season and 4-0 in District 15-3A play.
The Yellowjackets fell to 2-2 in district play.
Both coaches relied on their starters throughout the game as Athens pitcher Garrett Conley threw a complete game 12 hitter with five strikeouts and one walk. He threw 110 pitches in the game.
Browning threw a complete game 11 hitter with eight strikeouts and three walks. He threw 141 pitches for the Yellowjackets.
AHS took it’s first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning off Browning as Gabe Gross reached base with two outs, followed by a single from Jesse Taylor to put two men on base.
Daniel Mossberger then drove in Gross with an RBI single to right field for the 1-0 lead.
Mineola was able to take their only lead of the game at 2-1 in the top of the third inning as Lance Seeton opened the inning with a single and reached second on a throwing error by Conley.
Woods then drove in Seeton from second with an RBI double followed by an RBI single from Logan Fowler to deep right field for the 2-1 lead.
The Hornets tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning as Morgan Gimler led off the inning with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Travis Takata.
Adam Stallings then blasted a 2-1 count to left field scoring Gimler.
Conley was able to get out of a jam in the top of the sixth inning followed a double by Seth Bickerstaff, Conley walked Lucas Flourney.
Garrett McCalla then hit into the third double play of the game as Bickerstaff made his way to third.
With a 2-2 count on Hunter Creech, Conley got him swinging for the third out of the inning.
The Hornets were led by Takata — who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Mossberger went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Taylor finished 2-for-4 with the game winning RBI.
The Hornets return to the diamond April 5th at 6:30 p.m. at Brownsboro.
