JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Flight grounded

TVCC men return home, deliver 85-55 blowout win

ATHENS — The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals rebounded from their second loss of the season with an 85-55 victory over the East Texas Flight club team Thursday at Cardinal Gym.

The Cardinals improved to 4-2 on the season and have now won four of their last five games under first-year TVCC head coach Kris Baumann. They were coming off a 73-50 loss to Midland in Corsicana last weekend.

Jhaustin Thomas, a two-sport standout who also played football for TVCC this season, led the charge for the Cardinals with 15 points. He was joined in double figures by teammates Dominique Elliott, who finished with 13, Octavius Ellis, who had 12, and Joshua Gentry, who ended the night with 10 points.

TVCC jumped out to leads of 9-0, 19-2 and 45-10 before heading to the locker room at halftime with a 50-15 advantage.

WOMEN

TVCC 79, Southern Idaho 49

MIDLAND — The No. 4-ranked TVCC Lady Cardinals got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Julianne Anchling en route to a 79-49 win over the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles to open the Midland College National Invitation Tourn-ament on Thursday.

The win handed the defending national champion Lady Cardinals (6-0) their 42nd consecutive victory dating back to last season. TVCC will play Odessa today at 6 p.m. Odessa was a 70-63 winner over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Shlonte’ Allen (15 points), Shannon Smith (14) and Roddricka Patton (10) also scored in double figures for the Lady Cardinals.
