AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: AHS girls swim team finishes sixth at Lufkin meet

LUFKIN — The Athens Hornets swim team competed at the Lufkin Invitational last Saturday as the girls’ team finished in sixth out of 18 teams.

Alli Harden finished in second place in the 50 free and the 100 free. Teammate Lauren Takata was four in the 100 backstroke and the 50-free. Mary Cheadle finished in 12th place in the 50-free and in 14th place in the 100 backstroke.

The 200 medley relay team of Takata, Hardin, Cheadle, and Ester Granillo finished in 10th place. They also finished 10th in the 200 free relay.  

Coach Dewayne Davis said the boys team is working hard and are led by Nathan Garner, Josh Sims and Samuel Nichols.

BHS Bearettes drop game to Bullard

The Brownsboro Bearettes lost to Bullard 59-41 Tuesday night at Brownsboro.

Tamaria Manning led the way for the Bearettes with 13 points — hitting two 3-pointers — while teammates M.J. Alexander and Briana Warren scored six points each. Sidney Hightower and Madison Montgomery added four points each, Shelbie Bagby had three points, Reagan Allen and Victoria Walker had two points each and Devin Carver added one point.

In junior varsity action, Brownsboro won 18-15 and the Brownsboro freshman won 48-10.

The Brownsboro varsity will return to action playing in the Mount Vernon Tournament Nov. 21-23.

LaPoynor boys beat Whitehouse, 61-51

LAPOYNOR — The LaPoynor Flyers opened up their season with a big win over Class 4A Whitehouse last Tuesday by a score of 61-51 at LHS gymnasium.

The Flyers were led by Mason Motal with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Wade Lang added 12 points and four rebounds.

Teammate Lane McClelland added nine points and five rebounds, Colton Clair had eight points, Seth Anderson added seven points and four rebounds, JaCorey Williams had six points and Octavious Crear had four points, seven assists and five rebounds.
