COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Browning honored as SBC’s top offensive player

ATHENS — Former Mabank Panther quarterback Kolton Browning received another honor by the Sun Belt Conference earlier this month.

Browning was named the Offensive Player of the Year — after a season in which he led the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks to an 8-4 regular season and their first ever bowl appearance — a trip to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. against Ohio University.

“It gives him one more national stage to play in leading up to his senior year,” ULM coach Todd Berry said. “I think he will go out and play extremely well playing in pressure situations. I think he likes to be in big games and lead the team in big games throughout the year.”    

He threw for over 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns during his junior season. He threw seven interceptions for the Warhawks.

“Kolton was tremendously impactful for us this year,” ULM coach Todd Berry said. “It would have been really interesting if he could have played the entire year to see what kind of numbers he would have finished with after the numbers he had this year.”

According to the University of Louisiana-Monroe website, Browning was honored with the Davey O'Brien quarterback of the week award, the Louisiana Offensive Player of the Week award, the Maxwell Award Watch list — for the best player in College football.

He was also recognized as the Sun Belt Conference Offensive player of the week and the Walter Camp Offensive player of the week.

Browning finished the regular season with second-team all conference honors and also ranks second in total offense, third in passing yards per game and fifth in passing efficiency.

During his senior season at Mabank, he was named Player of the Year on the Athens Daily Review's All Henderson County Area football, basketball and baseball teams.
