East Texas Fishing Report
ATHENS - Lake Athens is at normal level and clear. Water temp is in the low 70s.
Jerry Hanson at Lake Athens Marina said bass fishing has been excellent. Good numbers of slot fish are taking spinnerbaits and blue fleck plastics worked from the bank out to six feet. Crappie are good around brush piles and boat docks in 4-8 feet of water.
Bream are excellent on crickets fished in 2-4 feet of water. A few catfish taking nightcrawlers and shrimp fished in shallow water.
CEDAR CREEK - The lake is at normal level and stained. Water temp is in the low 70s.
Bass are fair on jigs, Texas rigs and spinnerbaits worked around boat docks and brush piles in water ranging 5-10 feet deep, according to fishing guide Jason Barber. Crappie are beginning to gang up around brush at similar depths. Jigs and shiners are working equally well at times.
Catfish are good on shad and cut perch tightlined on sandy points and shorelines. Fish windy banks whenever possible. White bass and hybrids are taking Rat-L-Traps and crankbaits when actively schooling over points, mostly early in the day. Spoons are working best at midday, when the fish go to bottom in 14-20 feet of water.
RICHLAND CHAMBERS - RC is about two feet low and stained in the backs of the creeks. Water temp is in the upper 60s.
Larry Winters at Midway Landing said catfish have been excellent on punch bait soaked in standing timber, 10-15 feet. Flats adjacent to flowing creeks are holding good numbers of channels. White bass are good on all sorts of moving baits. The fish are schooling near the surface, mostly at mid-morning. Limits are coming quickly.
Black bass are slow since the rise. Spinnerbaits and lizards are working best around newly flooded weedbeds. Crappie are scattered and tough to find.
PALESTINE - Lake Palestine is at normal level and stained. Water temp is in the mid-70s.
Bass are fair to five pounds on Carolina rigs and Texas rigs dragged slowly on main lake points and along creek channel breaks at the south end of the lake. Deep diving cranks have been effective on points. Spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits are producing a few fish around shallow weedbeds and boat docks.
Crappie fishermen are reporting partial limits on live shiners and jigs. Brush piles have been most consistent; a few good reports also coming from the Highway 155 bridge. White bass are slow.
Catfish are good on jug lines tipped with cut perch. Rod and reelers are picking up limits of blues and channels using night crawlers and punch bait on sandy points.
NACOGDOCHES - Lake Nacogdoches is at normal level and stained up north, clearer down south. Water temp is in the mid-70s.
Bass are fair to four pounds on wacky worms, Senkos, Flukes and crankbaits worked around shallow grass beds. Drop shot Trick Worms are productive in the same areas. A few fish reported on frogs tossed around lily pads in shallow water. Boat docks with brush are holding a few fish, as well. In deeper water try dragging a Carolina rig or football jig on main lake points and along creek bends.
Crappie are fair on jigs fished around the deeper, outside grass lines. Brush piles in 18-25 feet of water also have been good for a few keepers.
FORK - Heavy rains pushed the water level two feet above normal, but things should be getting closer to normal by now. The water is stained and surface temp is in the upper 60s, low 70s.
Fishing guide Gary Paris said bass fishing has been good to eight pounds on jigs tossed to outside grass edges in 8-10 feet of water. Medium diving cranks in chartreuse/purple and baby bass patterns have been producing good numbers of slot fish. Topwaters and buzz baits are drawing some vicious strikes over flooded vegetation.
Crappie fishing has been good on jigs and Roadrunners fished slowly over grass beds in 6-8 feet of water. Plenty of non-keepers coming on minnows soaked around the bridges. Catfish are good on punch bait fished beneath a slip cork along outside grass edges and around bald spots the grass.
TOLEDO BEND - T-Bend is at normal level, but water levels could rise with new water coming down from the Lake Fork. The water is stained up north, clearer down south. Water temp is in the mid-70s.
Charlie Shively at Bill's Landing said catfishing has been excellent to 60 pounds on trotlines. Lots of fish in the 10-20 pound range showing up at the cleaning table. Rod and reelers are picking up some quality blues and channels in shallow water using night crawlers. Cut bait is producing best.
Crappie fishing has been slow; the fish are scattered. Bass are good on frogs and spinnerbaits fished around pepper grass and other new growth vegetation in shallow water at the north end of the lake. Fishing guide Stephen Johnston is picking up a few fish on crankbaits worked around submerged grass south of the bridge.
PINKSTON - Lake Pinkston is at normal level and slightly stained, except on the main lake. Water temp is in the low-to-mid-70s.
Bass are fair to seven pounds on wacky worms, Senkos and Flukes finessed around submerged grass and outside grass edges in 3-8 feet of water. A few fish taking Carolina rigs and Texas rigs dragged along creek channels and brush piles near the dam.
Crappie are hit and miss. A few fish taking small jigs fished around the deeper outside grass edges. Best bite has been on shiners soaked in brush.
SAM RAYBURN - The lake is about a foot low and stained up north, clearer down south. Stained in some of the creeks. Water temp is in the low-to-mid-70s.
Bass fishing has been good on a watermelon red magnum Trick Worms fished wacky style with a Stanley T-Wacky hook. The bite is best around shallow water pepper grass and hydrilla. A few fish also reported on lipless crankbaits. Ann Thomasson Wilson at Ann's Tackle said topwater baits are producing good results in the same areas.
