GATESVILLE — After taking a couple of shots to the chin Monday in the opening round of the Gatesville Invitational Basketball Tournament, the Athens Hornets came roaring back Tuesday to post a pair of victories.
Second-year coach Tracy Carter’s Hornets opened action Tuesday with a 56-42 win over Waco Robinson and then rallied for a 50-44 win over Groesbeck.
Monday, the Hornets suffered an 80-73 loss to Austin Crockett and a narrow 62-60 decision to Waco Connally.
The 2-2 tournament record moved the Hornets to 7-5 on the year.
The Hornets are scheduled to be back in action Saturday at Van. Ninth grade action tips off at 4:30 p.m.
Freshman Kendall Sanders led the Hornets against Waco Robinson with 16 points. Sanders was backed by a balanced scoring effort with Nick Monmouth with nine and Courtney Whitehead, Robert Morgan and Jonathan Dora with eight each.
The Hornets outscored the Rockets 29-17 in the second half.
In the win over Groesbeck, the Hornets rallied from a 41-35 defict in the fourth quarter with a 15-3 scoring advantage.
Dora drilled 16 points to lead the Hornets. Morgan had eight, Desmond Bowie five andd Devon Bowie, Sanders, Whitehead and Monmouth four each.
Groesbeck was up 25-24 at the half after having led 19-8 at the end of the opening quarter.
