East Texas Fishing Report

The East Texas Fishing Report, for the week of December 15:

ATHENS — Lake Athens is seven inches low and clear. Water temp is in the low 50s.

 Fishing traffic has been light due to nasty weather, especially early in the week.

 Bass anglers reported fair results in shallow water before the front, mainly on lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits fished around shallow grass beds and lily pad stubble.

 Crappie anglers are scoring some nice limits on live shiners. The fish are bunched up around deep brush piles in 25-30 feet of water.

 CEDAR CREEK — The lake is about two feet low and stained. Water temp is in the low 50s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber said catfishing has been good when the wind allows. Blues and channelsare taking cut shad fished near shore in about five feet of water, mostly on wind blown points. A few anglers having success drifting over over deep flats and along creek channels with shrimp and cut bait.

 Bass are good on jigs, spinnerbaits and crankbaits worked around rip raft and boat docks that offer some brush. Chartreuse, shad and crawfish color patterns are working best.

White bass and hybrids are still taking bucktail jigs and swim baits around lighted boat docks, but the bite has slowed down significantly from previous weeks.

 Barber said crappie fishermen are picking up limits using live shiners and jigs around brush piles in 15-30 feet of water.

 RICHLAND CHAMBERS — RC is about four feet low and stained. Water temp is in the low 50s.

 High winds have made all fishing tough. Larry Winters at Midway Landing says bass fishermen finding good numbers of quality fish in shallow water. The fish are still relating to wood along creek channel breakss in 2-5 feet of water. Best bite hast been on jigs and spinnerbaits.

 Catfish are fair on punch bait and cut shad soaked in standing timber, 15-18 feet deep. The fish are holding on bottom. White bass are fair in 20-28 feet of water. The fish are beginning to bunch up on points and humps. Spoons are the ticket. Crappie are slow.
