BRENHAM — The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals overcame a slow start to score a 69-54 win over Blinn College’s Buccaneers in Region XIV Conference action Saturday.
But the news was not all good for TVCC. The 11th-ranked Lady Cardinals saw a 20-game winning streak end with a 69-64 loss in their regular season finale.
The Cardinals are scheduled to close the regular season at home Tuesday against Navarro. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
MEN
Blinn jumped out to a 15-1 lead to open the game. The Cardinals regrouped and were up 38-33 at halftime.
Jay Smith led the Cardinals with 20 points, including six three-pointers. Amir Rashad had 16 points, tossing in four three-pointers.
Mike Pugh and Lonnard Donnell added 10 points each for TVCC.
Blinn was 8-of-18 from the free throw line. The Cardinals were 3-of-4.
The win raised the Cardinals’ season record to 16-13. They are 11-10 in the conference and will either be the fifth or sixth seed in the upcoming regional tournament.
Blinn fell to 16-12 and 10-11 marks.
WOMEN
Despite the loss the Lady Cardinals still won the conference title by two full games over the Lady Bucs and will be the top seed in the regional tournament Friday-Monday in Kilgore.
The Lady Cardinals saw their season record fall to 24-5. They were 16-2 in the conference.
Blinn upped its records to 24-5 and 13-4.
The Lady Bucs will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The third and fourth seeds will be either Tyler or Angelina. Panola will be seeded fifth and Jacksonville sixth.
The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to play at 1 p.m. Sunday in the semifinals.
