East Texas Fishing Report

The East Texas Fishing Report for the week of Oct. 14:

ATHENS — Lake Athens is at normal level and clear. Water temp is in the low 80s.

Bass fishing has been good. Plenty of slot fish reported on Texas rig worms dragged in 6-8 feet of water. Topwaters have been effective early and late, mostly around boat houses and over open flats where schoolies are active.

Crappie are fair. Best bite has been at night, mostly on minnows soaked around boat docks doctored with brush.

CEDAR CREEK — Cedar Creek is about six inches low and fairly clear. Water temp is in the low 80s.

Bass are fair to about four pounds. Dean Janke at Sunny Glen Resort said light Texas rigs, spinnerbaits and shad pattern cranks are drawing strikes on points with brush, and around boat docks. A few fish also reported on topwaters and frogs worked over flats near creek breaks.

Crappie anglers are collecting partial limits using minnows at the Clear Creek bridge. Brush piles also have been good for anglers in the know.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — The lake is about six inches low and clear. Water temp is in the low 80s.

Larry Winters at Midway Landing said bass fishing has been fair to three pounds on topwaters worked around grass early, then switching to Carolina rigs at midday.

Catfish are fair on punch bait soaked on windy banks and in standing timber 12-15 feet deep.

White bass are good. The better fish are holding on points and humps in 15-20 feet. There has been some schooling activity early and late, but most are small.

FORK — Lake Fork is at normal level and clear. Water temps ranging 78-83 degrees.

Bass are good to nine pounds on light Texas rigs fished along outside grass lines. Lots of small fish reported. Wacky worms, Senkos and buzz frogs are producing some solid fish over submerged grass.

Crappie are scattered. Guides and locals are picking up partial limits on minnows and jigs fished around bridge pilings and brushpiles in 20-30 feet of water.

Catfish are good to 57 pounds on jugs. Rod and reelers are scoring limits of channel cat to five pounds on punch bait.

NACOGDOCHES — Lake Nacogdoches is about 15 inches low and clear. Water temp is the low 80s.

Bass are fair to 3 1/2 pounds on buzz frogs worked around lily pads and scattered grass in 2-4 feet of water, mostly during low light conditions. Light Texas rigs, drop shots and medium crankbaits are working fairly well along outside grass lines.

Crappie anglers are picking up partial limits using jigs and minnows over brush piles and along channel breaks.

TOLEDO BEND — Toledo Bend is four feet low and clear. Water temp is in the low 80s.

Charlie Shively at Bill's Landing said crappie fishing is improving daily. Several fish in the two-pound range weighed during the last week. Best bite has been on minnows in 15-20 feet of water along the edges of the Sabine River. The fish are holding 12-14 feet down.

Bass fishing has been fair on crankbaits, topwaters and spinnerbaits tossed around shallow weedbeds and flats near creeks.The better bite has been on main lake structure in 14-17 feet of water, when the wind allows. White bass are schooling on and off. Rat-L-Traps are producing fast limits when the whites are up.

SAM RAYBURN — The lake is slightly more than four feet below full pool and clear. Water temp is in the low 80s.

Bass fishing has been fair to 10 pounds on deep diving cranks, jigs and Carolina rig plastics fished in relation to main lake structure. Good reports also coming on topwaters and buzz frogs worked in skinny water, 2-4 feet. Scattered hydrilla and lily pads are the key.
