Williams receives national honor

Trinity Valley Community College defensive back Malcolm Williams is one of four players named NJCAA Players of the Week for performances in Sept. 8 games.

Williams joins Andre Simmons (Independence Community College), Mikhail Lindsay (Butler Community College) and Pat Riley (Eastern Arizona College) in sharing the honor.

Williams and Lindsay are Co-Defensive Players of the Week. Simmons is the Offensive Player of the Week. Riley receives the Special Teams Player of the Week award.

Williams, a 5-10, 195-pound Grand Prairie freshman, helped TVCC upset No. 5 Georgia Military College in double-overtime by recording 11 tackles (8 solo, 3 assisted) and three pass break-ups.

His biggest contributions came on a 54-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 6:03 left in the first quarter. Then in the first overtime, Williams intercepted a Georgia Military pass to turn back the Bulldogs, who had the ball first. Trinity Valley would miss a field goal to end the first extra frame to move the game into a second overtime.

Williams was also named the Southwest Junior College Football Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.
