East Texas Fishing Report

The East Texas Fishing Report for the week of Aug. 26:

ATHENS — Lake Athens is at normal level and clear. Water temp is in the upper 80s.

Bass fishing has fair-to-good with best results coming at night on black or black/neon Powerworms fished along drops in 6-12 feet of water. There also has been a good bite in shallow water around lily pads.

Crappie fishing has been slow. Catfishermen are reporting good results using night crawlers and punch bait from shore.

CEDAR CREEK — Cedar Creek is about six inches low and clear. Water temp is in the low 90s.

Dean Janke at Sunny Glen Resort said bass anglers are reporting slow results to three pounds on frogs and Texas rig worms worked along creek channel breaks.

Catfish are good to six pounds on night crawlers fished off docks at night. Crappie are slow. White bass are fair under lights at night, mainly at the Clear Creek bridge. Hybrids are taking spoons and deep cranks fished over main lake humps near the dam.

PALESTINE — Lake Palestine is at normal level and stained. Water temp is in the low 90s.

Greg Porter at Porter's Sporting Goods said crappie are fair on minnows fished around bridge pilings and brush piles in 15-25 feet of water.

Bass are fair to five pounds on swim baits, spinnerbaits and cranks. The bite has been tough overall.

Catfish are fair in stump fields in 2-6 feet of water. Jug liners are picking up blues to 20 pounds on cut shad and perch. White bass traffic has been very light.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — RC is about normal level and fairly clear. Water temp is in the low 90s.

Crappie are good for partial limits, according to Larry Winters at Midway Landing. Winters said anglers are using minnows to pick up keepers in 15-25 feet of water.

Bass anglers are reporting fair results to four pounds on spinnerbaits, cranks and Texas rig worms fished around boat docks and main lake points with grass.

White bass are most active early and late. Try Rat-L-Traps when the fish are schooling, spoons when they go deep.

FORK — Lake Fork is about normal level and clear. Water temperature is in the mid-to-upper 80s.

Fishing guide Gary Paris said bass fishing has been good to five pounds on light Texas rigs, wacky worms and crankbaits tossed around outside grass edges in 8-12 feet of water. Paris said the deep water bite has slowed way down.

Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs fished around bridge pilings and brush piles. The fish are suspended about 12-15 feet down.

Catfish are fair to five pounds on punch baited soaked on bottom in 20-25 feet of water.

SAM RAYBURN — Sam Rayburn is about two inches low and clear. Water temp is in upper 80s.

Bass are fair on topwaters, Super Flukes and weightless Senkos tossed to outside grass edges in 8-12 feet of water. Midday bite is best on jigs and Carolina rig lizards in 8-15 feet, according to Ann Thomasson-Wilson at Ann's Tackle.

Crappie fishing has gotten tough over the last couple of weeks. Minnows are producing the best results 25-30 feet of water.

PINKSTON — Lake Pinkston is about six inches low and clear. Water temp is in the low 90s.

Fishing guide Alan Spruiell said bass fishing has been fair to seven pounds on Texas rig worms and jigs fished around brush tops and along outside grass edges in 12-15 feet of water.

Crappie are fair on minnows soaked around brush tops in 28 feet of water. The fish are suspended at 12-15 feet.

NACOGDOCHES — Nacogdoches is a few inches low and clear. Water temp is in the low 90s.

Bass fishing has been fair on plastic worms at night. A 13-pounder was reported over the weekend. The bass was caught in 20-22 feet of water. A few fish hitting buzz frogs over lily pads early and late. Drop shots and light Texas rigs also producing along outside grass lines.

Crappie are fair on minnows fished vertical around deep brush, mostly at night.

TOLEDO BEND — T-Bend is one foot low and clear. Water temp is hot — 88-92 degrees.

Charlie Shively at Bill's Landing said catfishing has been good to 50 pounds on live and cut bait. Rod and reelers are picking up blues to six pounds on night crawlers and cut shad fished on bottom at the edge of the Sabine River. Key water depth is 12-15 feet.

Bass are good to four pounds on light Texas rig worms (redbug) fished in weedbeds 4-7 feet deep. A few fish also reported on Senkos.

Crappie are fair on minnows fished along river ledges in 15 feet of water.

SABINE LAKE — Fishing guide Dickie Colburn said specks and reds have been active all around the lake recently, mostly in areas where shrimp are dimpling the surface. Plastics in glow/chartreuse, pumpkinseed and cajun pepper and hoginar have been hot. Colburn said a few reds and specks are taking bone/chrome and black/chartreuse She Dogs along the Louisiana shoreline, as well.
