AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Lady Hornets thump Chapel Hill, 10-1

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets improved to 3-2 in District 31-4A play with a dominating 10-1 win over the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs Friday night at Bruce Field.

Athens freshman Makayle Traxson added to a team-leading goal total with four goals in the first 11 minutes of the game.

Freshman Kyra Robison and Olivia Negrete scored two goals each, while Gabby Lawyer and Melinda Green added one goal for Athens.

Lawyer also recorded one assists, while Isabel Vasquez, Green, Monica Negrete and Ashley Garcia recorded assists.

Athens returns to the pitch tonight against John Tyler at Bruce Field. The junior varsity is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Athens falls to Chapel Hill, 1-0

The Athens Hornets lost a tough contest to the Chapel Hill Bulldogs 1-0 Friday night at Chapel Hill.

Coach Jonathan Ryal said the game was tied until 1:20 remaining in the game.

The Hornets are 4-13 overall and 1-4 in District 31-4A play. They will start the second half of district tonight on the road at John Tyler.

The junior varsity is set to begin play at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow around 7 p.m.

Athens Hornets open year at 5-2

The Athens Hornets baseball team wrapped up the Howard Estes baseball tournament with a 5-2 record Saturday in Palestine.

The Hornets lost in the championship game to Crockett, 5-2.

Following two victories on Thursday, Athens came back with a 5-2 loss to Crockett and a 7-1 win over Elkhart on Friday at Elkhart High School.

On Saturday, AHS beat Van, 5-2, to send them to the title game.

Athens faced Eustace Monday night at home. They will face Bullard in the Robbie Surratt Memorial Tournament on Thursday at 10:45 a.m. in Lindale.

They will also face Spring Hill at 11 p.m. on Thursday.

On Friday, Athens will face Mt. Pleasant at 8:30 a.m.

Bearettes finish as consolation champs

The Brownsboro Bearettes finished as the consolation champion of the Brenda Epperson Memorial Softball Tournament over the weekend at Brownsboro High School.

Brownsboro thumped Brook Hill 13-1 in the opener before losing 1-0 to Elkhart and 5-0 to Liberty-Eylau on Friday.

Brownsboro beat Robert E. Lee, 3-2, in the consolation final on Saturday.

The Bearettes return to action tonight at Frankston. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Mabank powerlifting finishes in fifth place

The Mabank Lady Panthers powerlifting team finished in fifth place in the team standings at the Wills Point Last Chance meet on Saturday.

Mabank finished with 14 points in the meet as they prepare for the regional meet this weekend in Crandall.

Leading the way for Mabank were Kelsey Clark and Shelby Haley with second place finishes, while Erin Reeder finished third and Michaela Rowan finished fifth.

Weinstein places 12th at state diving

Athens sophomore diver Avery Weinstein finished in 12th place in the state of Texas at the UIL State Diving meet over the weekend at the University of Texas at Austin.

Weinstein was in 14th place following the preliminaries on Friday.

Sine Scribbick from San Antonio Alamo Heights won the competition.

Brownsboro beats Wills Point in OT, 47-44

The Brownsboro Bears advanced to the Class 3A, Region II quarterfinals with a last-second 47-44 overtime victory over the Wills Point Tigers Friday night at Trinity Valley Community College.

Tied at 40-40 after regulation, Tamrick Pace took matters into his own hands scoring six of his team high 13 points in overtime.

Brownsboro Bears      post Quentin McKenzie added 10 points.

With the win, the Bears (20-13) will face the North Lamar Panthers tonight at 7 p.m. at Wills Point High School.

The winner of that contest will face either Decatur or Lone Star in the regional semifinals Friday night at 8 p.m. at Texas A&M Commerce.

Flyers take on Meyer in quarterfinals

The LaPoynor Flyers advanced to the Class A, Region III, Division I quarterfinals with a 46-29 win over the Mart Panthers Friday in Buffalo.

With the win, the No. 6-ranked Flyers will face Meyer in the regional quarterfinals tonight at Corsicana High School at 7 p.m.

The winner will face San Augustine or Alto in the regional semifinals Friday night at Tyler Junior College.

TVCC Lady Cards beat Paris, 74-62

The No. 1-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals improved to 27-1 overall and 16-0 in conference play with a 74-62 win over the Paris Lady Dragons Saturday afternoon in Paris.

The win was the Lady Cardinals 52nd straight conference win.

Leading the way for the Lady Cardinals was sophomore Adut Bulgak with 23 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, Deborah Meeks with 14 points and Shlonte’ Allen with 10 points.

The Lady Cards are at home Wednesday against Bossier Parish. Game time at Cardinal Gym is 5:30 p.m.

Cards winning streak snapped at Paris

The No. 5-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals dropped a, 67-58, contest to the Paris Dragons Saturday afternoon in Paris.

With the loss, the Cardinals are now 24-4 overall and 14-3 in conference play. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak.

TVCC trailed 31-25 at the half.

Josh Robinson led the way for the Cardinals with 16 points, four rebounds and one assists, while sophomore post Octavius Ellis added 13 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Patrick Ingram and Aldonis Foote scored 10 points each in the loss for the Cardinals.
