LONGVIEW — The Athens Hornets continued its push for a state tournament berth with a 90-79 win over the Pleasant Grove Hawks Friday night in the Class 3A, Region II area round at Longview Spring Hill High School.
With the win, the No. 10-ranked Hornets improved to 29-1 and will have a rematch with the Kilgore Bulldogs Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Wagstaff Gymnasium on the campus of Tyler Junior College.
Kilgore knocked Athens out of the playoffs in last year’s bi-district round with a 67-51 win.
Senior guard Anthony Sanders lit up the scoreboard once again with a triple double that included 37 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds. Sanders scored 10 points in the first half of play.
Foul trouble played a big role in the game as Ryan Jefferson, Chris Jefferson and Travon Fuller fouled out for Athens.
Courtland Lyons helped lead the Athens attack with 25 points off of the bench, while Ryan Jefferson added 15 points.
