REGION XIV BASKETBALL MEDIA TIP-OFF: Time to prove their case (w/coaches poll)

TVCC women picked to win conference, TVCC men picked fourth

Athens — With the re-emergence of former Trinity Valley Community College women’s coach Michael Landers back at TVCC, second year head men’s basketball coach Kris Baumann had to make a comment about the former coach.

“When I got a call this summer and found our Johnny (Estelle) was leaving, I was jumping up and down and it was the best two weeks of my life,” Baumann said. “When I got the call that they hired Michael Landers, I said, “Are you kidding me?” Of all of the people I didn’t want them to hire, he made the rivalry that much more.”

Baumann also mentioned the new scoreboards hanging in Cardinal Gym and how Landers was one of the salesman for the scoreboard.

TVCC decided to go with another company and Baumann said that may have added to the rivalry.

His Cardinals — 22-12 a season ago in Baumann’s first year at the helm — were picked to finish fourth in the East Zone by his peers in the annual Coaches Poll released at the Tip-Off, which was held this year at Trinity Valley Community College and sponsored by the Athens Daily Review.

Navarro — last year’s regional tournament runner up — and the new home of Landers was picked to finish second in the North Zone, receiving two of 22 first-place votes. Kilgore, with eight first-place votes, was picked to win the East Zone.

“I spent a decade (at TVCC) finishing our games first and then standing along the wall and thought to myself so many different times, “you would have to be a fool to coach in the men’s division and now I am one of those fools,” Landers said.

In the South Zone, the coaches picked last year’s national tournament team Lee College as the favorite this season.

On the women’s side, The two-time defending national champion TVCC Lady Cardinals once again received praise from conference coaches, claiming nine of 10 first-place votes to finish atop the women’s poll. Blinn was picked second and Tyler third.

The Lady Cards, who finished 36-1 in 2012, are led by coach Elena Lovato and return six players from last year’s title team.

They will be led by co-captains Roddricka Patton and Kyhonta Doughty, Adut Bulgak, Shlonte’ Allen, Julianne Anchling and Dominique Brooks.

“The 2012-2013 Lady Cardinals had an amazing bond. Now with the addition of six extremely talented players, I think we have our hands full,” Lovato said. It will be a ride and this group will be special,”  We have a lot of potential and I think our roster is full of experience and talent.”
