The Trinidad Trojans capped off Homecoming festivities with a 56-8 win over the Penelope Wolverines Saturday night at Trojans Field.
The game ended on the second play of the third quarter via the 45-point mercy rule as senior Jordon Wright found an opening for 45-yards down the sideline with 9:43 remaining in the quarter.
With the win, coach Tom McVey’s squad is 4-3 on the season. They will have this week off before starting District 16, 6-man play next week at Milford.
“Like I said before if we are not a “WE” when we head into district, we will be coming right back to Trinidad when the season is over,” Wright said. “Whatever we do in district, we need to be a team.”
Trinidad opened up the scoring in the first quarter as Jovante’ Hornbuckle found an opening in the Penelope defense for a 21-yard touchdown run with 6:29 remaining.
Penelope found a way to gain their only lead of the game when B.J. McMulen connected with Corey Nave for a five-yard touchdown strike with 2:59 remaining.
“We are still very susceptible to the pass,” McVey said. “We need to cover it well and we are still having issues with working on that and we need to get better at it.”
McVey said he is concerned with how the passing game went Saturday even though Penelope went 6-of-15 for 56 yards.
“We have to come together as a team,” McVey said. “We are still not gelling like I want us too and we have to defend the pass. If we can’t deal with the pass, we will be dead in the water against Milford and Calvert.”
Following the Penelope touchdown, Trinidad scored the final 44 points of the game.
Trinidad had four passing touchdowns of more than 30 yards as T.J. McVey connected with Dustin Bannister, Lee Vasquez and Chris Bannister.
In the second quarter, Wright was able to extend his touchdown play as he found a wide open Matt Snider for 35-yards with 4:55 remaining in the half.
McVey said once the game was in hand in the second quarter, he was able to use more of his bench to get ready for the district run.
“It was good,” McVey said. “It was good getting the younger guys in there too because we knew this was not going to be an easy game but it was not going to be a chore.”
The Trojans also had a defensive touchdown from freshman Ronald Marcus on a 51-yard fumble return with 3:23 remaining in the half.
T.J. McVey went 5-of-8 for 168 yards and three touchdowns for the Trojans.
